5 Questions for a Feminist: Kesharni

At the One Woman Project, we run on volunteers, and we want to shine a light on those volunteers, and their perspectives on feminism, as well as their roles within our organisation. We will be running 5 Questions for a Feminist throughout our blog, so keep an eye out to learn more about our OWP team!

First up, Kesharni!

Meet Kesh!

Meet Kesharni!

  1. What is your name and role?

Kesharni Goonewardene, Queensland State Financial Officer

2. What does a typical day look like for you in your role as an OWP volunteer?

My responsibilities vary from day to day. One day I could be issuing quotes or invoices through our Xero account, the other I could be preparing and writing grant applications to try and secure funding for the fantastic projects that OWP hosts or simultaneously doing both.

3. What area of feminism are you most passionate about and why?

To be specific, I’m passionate about the economical differences that impact women, largely being the gender pay gap. I feel like this is a flagrant disregard and omission of acknowledgement for the work that women do in ALL different and varied aspects, and only works to benefit patriarchal structures.  I am also passionate about ensuring and reminding individuals that feminism must always remain intersectional. This is of particular importance to me, as we must acknowledge where we are privileged, while understanding that not everyone has the same privileges and experience different barriers.

4. Why did you decide to join OWP?

One day I was just googling volunteer positions for anywhere that focused on gender equality, then I found OWP. I was immediately thrilled to see an organisation like this existed in Brisbane and knew it was the place for me to learn more about feminism. I wanted to be someone who was actively contributing to a better future for society through education and awareness. So that was that, I knew I had to apply, I would say getting the State Financial Officer position at OWP was the highlight of 2017 for me.

5. What do you like to do outside your OWP role?
