This year our fantastic team hosted the Drinks and Dialogues event at the Burrow in West End, Meanjin (Brisbane), where we got to discuss all things feminism, and meet some of our wonderful community.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along on the night!

This event took place on the unceeded land of the Turrbal and Jagera peoples. The One Woman Project pays our respects to Elders past and present. We thank them and are committed to follow their leadership in the fight for gender justice.

‘I’m not like other girls’: Misogyny, Manic Pixies, and the Media By Claire Valek (they/them)

Claire explored toxic tropes in contemporary pop culture, film, and media with an emphasis on the nice guy trope, 'pick me girls', and the manic pixie dream girl. We discovered, interrogated, and challenged the representation of women in media.

Reproductive Coercion By Lily Barras (she/her)

Lily took us on a quick dive into reproductive coercion, its intersection with abortion rights, and what we can do to prevent more women from experiencing this form of abuse.

This was an awesome event! Wouldn’t hesitate to attend something like this in the future.

Anna took us through a space-age story about misogyny, the truths behind what is stopping women from stepping on the moon, and ultimately, what is stopping many women from becoming leaders.

Activism Burnout and How to Fix It by Madeleine Hershey (she/they)

Maddie discussed the causes of activism burnout, what it looks like, and how it affects our wellbeing, attitudes, and behaviours. They analysed different steps and techniques on what to do when you experience activism burnout to encourage people to look after themselves and continue their fight for social justice.
