To Wimbledon and Beyond! - The Story of Ruia Morrison

By Sibelius no.5

This comic was inspired by and draws heavily from the episode “Hidden Figures in Tennis” by The Body Serve Tennis Podcast, hosted by James Rogers and Jonathan Newman.

Māori Terms

Marae: Literally refers to the open area in front of the wharenui (main building of a marae), where formal greetings and discussions take place. In this comic, marae refers to its colloquial meaning which refers to the complex of buildings around the marae, which are used for social and educational purposes, as well as more formal religious purposes. Marae can belong to a certain iwi (tribe), hapū (clan), or even specific communities.

Iwi: A Māori kinship group, roughly equivalent to “nation” or “people”, sometimes translated as “tribe”.

Hongi: A traditional Māori greeting where two people press their noses and foreheads together. It is used casually, akin to a handshake, though it also has a spiritual meaning in that through the hongi you share ha (breath of life).
